Our History: Jack Garrett and Steve Ihnen
Here at Garrett-Ihnen Civil Engineers, we fondly remember Jack Garrett. Our founder, Dr. Jack Taylor Garrett, Jr. was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on October 31, 1948. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, graduate of the University of Missouri and received his PH.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
In 1987, he joined the parent firm of AB Engineering and nine years later he bought the company from Alan Abbe and became the sole stockholder. In January 1997, he changed the company name to Garrett/Associates Engineering, Inc. His management philosophy was to empower his employees to provide excellent service. This philosophy nurtured a team of professionals that has the confidence and ability to carry on the company’s design and production that continues to this day.
Every January, we mark the anniversary of Jack’s passing. He suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 49 at his home in 1998.
After Jack's passing, Steve Ihnen stepped forward and soon bought the company from Jack’s heirs.
Today, Mr. Ihnen serves as President of Garrett-Ihnen Civil Engineers and he continues to expand Jack’s legacy and reflect the personal and professional qualities that inspire us to continually strive for excellence.
As our company continues to grow, we regret that our newer employees never had the pleasure of experiencing Jack Garrett's leadership. And not a day goes by that we don’t wish Jack was still with us and enjoying our success and camaraderie.
